Splitting trip costs without the spreadsheet

Group expenses, custom splits, optimised pay-list at the end.

Going somewhere with friends? Sharing a holiday house? Splitting a group gift? HeyKit Trips replaces the WhatsApp-and-Excel dance. Add participants (whether they use HeyKit or not), log every expense with a custom split, and the app calculates the minimum number of payments to settle up at the end.

Full custom splits per expense

Every expense has a payer and a list of who shares the cost. Each person's share is a manual amount — you decide. There's a 'Split equally' button as a starting point.

  • Checkboxes pick who's included for each expense
  • Live validation strip: 'Allocated R420 of R600 · R180 left' (green when balanced)
  • Tweak individual shares for unequal cases ('Alice had the lobster')
  • Save blocked until shares sum to the expense amount to the cent

Multi-currency (no FX conversion)

Going to Bali? Set the trip currency to IDR. The whole trip stays in IDR — entries, balances, suggestions. No exchange-rate baking, no surprise rounding. ZAR / USD / EUR / GBP / AUD / NAD / BWP / MUR / THB / IDR / JPY in the picker.

Optimised pay-list at the end

Once the trip is done, HeyKit calculates the minimum set of transfers to settle every balance. 'Mike → Dan R150 · Sarah → Dan R270' instead of N-squared back-and-forths.

  • Greedy match: biggest creditor with biggest debtor, repeat
  • Always ≤ N−1 transfers for N non-zero balances
  • Record each settlement to mark debts as cleared

Public read-only share link

Generate an unguessable URL → drop it in the group chat. Anyone with the link sees live balances and the suggested pay-list. They don't need a HeyKit account. Rotate or revoke any time.

Free-text + HeyKit participants

Trip-mates don't need to be HeyKit users. Add them as a name (with optional email). When you settle, the app tracks who paid whom by name.

In practice

What you can do with this

Long weekend in Cape Town with 6 mates

One person pays for the Airbnb, another pays for fuel and groceries, another covers dinners. Add it all in, the app sorts out the EFTs at the end.

House renovation with co-owners

Multiple owners, multiple contractors, lots of receipts. Each owner pays for whatever they covered. The trip becomes a running ledger.

Bali holiday in IDR

Trip currency set to IDR. Every entry is 'Rp 850,000' or 'Rp 4,500,000'. No mental conversion to ZAR until settlement (you can do that offline).

Common questions

Do my friends need a HeyKit account?

No. Add them as free-text names. They can view balances via the read-only share link without ever signing up.

Can trip-mates add expenses themselves?

Not yet — currently the owner family bookkeeps for the trip (everyone else WhatsApps them their amounts to add). Multi-family editable invites are on the roadmap.

How does the optimised pay-list work?

Greedy match — biggest creditor (most owed) paired with biggest debtor (owes most), settle for the smaller amount, repeat. Produces a minimal set of transfers (≤ N−1 for N people).

What happens to a trip after everyone settles?

Mark it Closed — locks edits while keeping the history. Reopen any time if a stray expense shows up later.

Can I export the trip data?

It's included in the standard JSON backup. CSV export is on the roadmap.

Ready to try it?

Free to use. Works offline. No credit card.
